HISTORY
It all started in 1936 when our founder, Frank Ruby, opened The Ruby Furniture Co. Frank Ruby knew early on that honesty and integrity would serve him well. These beliefs laid the foundation for his business career, and ultimately our family's business practices. Now in our 67th year of operation, our family continues to provide the most exciting array of quality home furnishings to the residents of Upstate New York, with the same guiding principles of honesty and integrity as our founder, Frank Ruby.
The original store was located in a small 800 square foot "kiosk" at the entrance of Rochester's most popular downtown movie house, The RKO Palace. It was only a few years later that the public response prompted a move to a larger store on the corner of Franklin & St Paul. This store had the unfortunate timing of opening December 7th, 1941, the day of the infamous attacks on Pearl Harbor. Interrupted by World War II, Frank Ruby went to work for Eastman Kodak, and it wasn't until after the war, in 1946, that he teamed up with Ted Gordon and resumed business under the current corporate name of Ruby-Gordon Furniture, Inc.
The new downtown Rochester store became an instant success as people returning from the war effort had a great demand for goods and services that were previously unavailable. The business continued to grow and prosper, prompting two more moves. In 1965, with the retirement of Ted Gordon, the store moved one last time to our current 135,000 square foot retail complex in the suburbs of Rochester, NY. Now, with the third generation of our family actively engaged in growing the business, we still hold true to the family tradition of honesty and integrity. This continual commitment to excellence was again recognized as Ruby-Gordon Furniture was voted the #1 furniture store in the Democrat & Chronicles Rochester Choice Award. |
